How to Add Stepping Stones

Stepping stones can make an unique looking path in your backyard. For a path that is going to get a lot of traffic, something more durable may be in order (the grass tends to get worn away between the stones on highly trod stepping stone paths), but for occasional use, stepping stones can work well to lead the eye to a part of your garden you want to highlight.

As far as landscaping goes, a stepping stone path is relatively simple to install, but it does involve a little more than just throwing some flat stones in the grass.

Tools you will need:

Groundwork Tools
Paving Tools

Materials:

Sharp sand
*Mortar
*Hardcore
Paving Slabs
Fine Soil
Grass Seed

*Probably only needed if the ground is loose, wet, or mounted.
