Tub gardens, also called container ponds, are sort of miniature ponds that are useful in smaller backyards where space is at a premium. They can also be built on the patios or decks of a condominium or apartment if that is all you have available.
Tub gardens are often made out of whiskey or wine barrels that have been cut in half. If you have an old children's wading pool laying around, that too, could be recycled to create a water feature. This gives you a diameter of about 3 feet to work with. It may not sound like a lot, but in that small space you could have fish and water snails along with foliage such as a water lily or water poppies. You can even install a small fountain.
Even if you have a larger space available to you, a tub garden can be the ideal way to break into water features without making the commitment of digging up your yard. You can start with one barrel and let it grow from there, interlinking them as needed.
There are also many kits available that come with everything you need to start a tub or container garden, including flora and fauna.
